-im sorry, Ma’am ... just a joke... didn't mean to be... we don't have
that here, but...
-patries??? - la mujer parecía aún
más contrariada tras la breve explicación -You mean you don't have pastries
here???¡¡¡
No

¿no habría
(Through the glass)”… y se va vendiendo… nada mal.. aquí y allá…

At first, he didn’t make anything of it. He'd
seen, after all, too many tourists taking unbelievably stupid photos.
"Capturing" dragon-shaped anything’s, here and there, everywhere
around Gothic Quarter after their guide had "shared" with the group
-he overheard this in his way to work- Barcelona was to be "the city with
more dragons in the western world"...ohhhhh¡¡¡¡... as if there was an
institution devoted to register the world's population of imaginary animals....
if any, -he thought to himself- a "mental" institution. That's for
sure¡
"BCN´s Random Bullshit Walking Tour" seemed, however, to have recently taken up his workplace as a sightseeing stop. “La Pallaressa” was certainly famous among locals for heavenly hot chocolate with homemade delicious cream, but visitors doing the tours showed, nevertheless, little interest in zipping. Whenever he saw a crowd outside, all of them sticking their noses (or mobiles) against the window, he would joke with the boss about what the guides would be saying to the gullible bunch. "122 km of churros are eaten here every day"; "this is where Columbus had his last cup of hot chocolate before departing to discover the New World"...or so...never mind the big "since 1942" sign hanging low in the very entrance... 1942, 1492/potato, potahto¡...
The other day, not long ago, some middle aged English speaking woman had made her way through the clientele up to the counter just for the sake of asking him directly -is it true this is where "the king of Barcelona" comes for pastries? -but, of course¡- he heard himself lying -he's actually here right now¡ ... if you can't recognize him, though, I’m afraid, i can't help you- he didn’t mean to laugh at her expense, but her disappointment was so childishly obvious he could not hold it, while, at the same time, feeling tenderly sorry for her. He´d taught himself to see and treat tourist as little children. Mainly, to be able to repress the sarcasm their ignorance enticed, but also, as a way to remain always helpful and sweet to them all and keep the tips coming his way. -I’m sorry, Ma’am¡... just a joke... didn’t mean to be... we don't have that here, but...- the lady was all the more puzzled after the explanation -pastries??? You mean you don't have pastries here???¡¡¡ - her tone reaching a rather uncomfortable pitch towards the end of the question -oh, no¡ pastries we do. I mean... we don’t have a “King” in Barcelona...The city Mayor -he offered instead -does come here often, though- but the woman didn’t seem excited. -Shakira¡(1)- he tried again one last time -she came here once.... with her husband... the soccer player¡- and while explaining how short the singer really was, specially, when standing beside the very tall Piqué(2), he reached for a picture of himself standing behind the bar, just like today, but flanked by a member of the celebrity couple on each side.

He was really mostly fine with it... being a story-teller himself, he pretty much understood guides were also paid just to make up stories they knew their audience wanted to believe. The only difference between their stories and the ones he wrote, mostly for himself, was that he didn't claim his to be true and the fact that he hadn't earned a penny by making them up. The little tourist-driven increase in tips, therefore, was somehow helping him feel conniving, even though he was spending much of this extra income in drycleaners and barbershops that kept him looking neat for the photos taken through the glass but by the dozen every day. Yes¡, he would have rather reading #youngtalentedwritter below the images of himself he'd found posted to Instagram, but then again, you could hardly say he was exactly "annoyed" by the #hotspanishwaiter he found instead.
Feeling flattered and his ego boosted he finished his shift and was ready to go home. Still inside, before reaching for the door, he could hear the crowd murmuring -here he comes¡... wow¡... isn't he handsome?... i actually find him hotter than... he felt his face burning with embarrassment but was confident it wouldn't show. He even thought of allowing a selfie or two with a sweet looking visitor girl and therefore saved the heavy raincoat and beanie for later. The words of the guide caught him off guard and hit below the belt: ... -now you guys... be quick, here you have him... failed aspiring actor, Adrian Brody's(3) half brother... waiter during the day... also pretty convincing when "playing the role" of a bar tender by night... - he elbowed his way out of the laughing crowd, feeling sorry for himself and thinking for the first time in his life of Mónica Cruz(4). –the poor thing! – he thought, and went home.
The following day was his day off and he spent
most of it ruminating the humiliation and assessing the unfairness of all the
lies that had fallen randomly upon him. The bloody Brody didn’t even have
brothers! … ¿ and what about that disproportionate hook the guy had for a nose?
… ¿wouldn’t such “genetic defect” be passed from one generation to the other for
evermore?... The mirror confirmed what he knew: His nose was quite normal.
Google, on its part, revealed the only thing in common he might have with the
actor was probably a slightly eccentric mother. He, on the other hand, wouldn´t
have let Pataki(5) scape, no matter how un-tall she was, she couldn’t possibly be
shorter than Shakira. He totally realized he was being delusional and that his
ranting was all too ridiculous and entirely useless. Yet, he couldn't t stop. “Aspiring!!!?”
what would they know about his aspirations? … “Failed!!!?” can one ever fail at
what one has never tried? If he´d ever “acted”, or if one could call “acting”
his mere appearance in a handful of local TV ads, was only to avoid the starvation
his degree in philology entailed. Only to finish up his career and to pay for the
publishing of his one and only book. For that, and to be able to afford the rather
expensive whims of a former girlfriend who he then considered “his muse”, for the
services of a completely useless literary agent, and the failed guidance of a professional
coach. Of course, he had failed. He had no trouble admitting to it. He just
hadn´t failed at acting. He´d failed at writing, in life and love, but at that,
at least once, who hadn´t? Who could ever claim to have lived, loved and
written always well? Who could honestly say, and be believed, that all efforts
made in those areas had been fairly acknowledge and compensated by all? If we
all failed, on a daily basis, a number of times, why the finger-pointing at those who fail
to achieve something anyone else, on their part, don’t ever accomplish anyway? Could
all of these walking-tourist be, perhaps, acclaimed Hollywood stars? Had they always
dreamed of a life that barely allowed for a yearly low-season trip to a rainy-cold Barcelona on a collective tour with a shitty guide? Wouldn´t they have
wanted instead to travel around the globe, in a private plane with their exclusive
traveling crew? Wasn´t this wintery and modest trip a piece of irrefutable
evidence of their resounding failure at traveling more, further, longer and in
style? …Not to talk about the very quick-witted guides. Had they dreamed, since
they were little, of becoming nothing more than shitty guides? He seriously
doubted that. Surely, as with every other kid, they had wanted to be soccer stars,
brave firemen, or respected surgeons. Most probably, they were all, like
himself, writers, historians, or architects who had failed at ever being successful
doing what they were supposed to do. Yes, he and his book had failed. But
hadn´t his coach and his agent failed along with it? Wasn´t that failure
something they had to share? Regardless of the blame placing, if she had ever
wanted to really love him until they were old, to have kids together, to share
expenses and a home, to last… hadn´t she failed as well, as much as he had, just
as she used to fail every day at getting up early, reading a book, calling her
mother, quitting all the cheating on him or giving up the smoking? He had realized all the “failure”
in them as soon as she stopped being a source of inspiration. Today, in turn, “failure”,
as a theme, had him going. He could spot it everywhere, explaining it all or
behind every situation. More ubiquitous that unanimous, “failure” appeared to
him now, like the very essence of life, and without it making it less of a
failure, the sole idea catapulted him out of bed and into the shower in a somehow
cynical but optimistic mood. He showed up for work.
The boss offered to transfer him to the inner
kitchen but he wouldn´t hear of it. He had worn his newest uniform set, was
clean shaved and even thought of posing for the cameras. That day he responded
to the flashing mobiles with his own, and took some five photos through the
window glass that would later inspire his writing suddenly free of any verisimilitude
related concerns. Two Chinese girls were to be engaged in the most absurd
dialogue about the resemblance of Gaudi’s warrior chimneys to their traditional
wontons. A couple carrying a baby, the tale of a surreal odyssey around the
gothic quarter to get rid of smelly diaper “outside of the old Roman wall” as
to avoid some ancient emperor´s malediction. Some middle-aged English-speaking woman
was to provide the face for his, in this case real, anecdote about the King of
Barcelona, Shakira and the pastries; and a couple of girls, their hands glued
to a bear can, a hot threesome including romance with an illegal street “sexy
beer” dealer from Bangladesh. Two weeks later he had put together over forty
stories. He named his second anthology “BCN´s Random Bullshit Walking Tour.
(Through the glass)” and its selling…
just fine… here and there…
